Release anxiety, enhance your immune system, strengthen your core and cultivate connection while doing a deep dive into the beautiful Djembe drum from the Mande people of West Africa. Learn the essential technique, some important history, powerful rhythms and their accompanying songs. We will also build a group rhythm by improvisation, one drum at a time. Bring your own djembe or rent ($10) or purchase ($195-$495 range) from Drumlady K. In a pinch, other goblet or conically shaped hand drums can be used (such as congs, doumbeks). All playing levels welcome. Kristen Arant, aka The Drumlady, is a musician, activist and teaching artist whose mission is to facilitate skilled artistry and self-expression, and to build community towards the goal of creating positive social change amongst a diverse student body, with a special focus on women and girls. Originally an oboe player majoring in music and called to the drum via her activist pursuits, Kristen has studied West African drumming, song and percussion for 20+ years in order to utilize these art forms as her primary tools in furthering her mission. Kristen is the founder of the DC non-profit Young Women’s Drumming Empowerment Project (YWDEP), and of the all-women’s West African drumming ensemble Bele Bele Rhythm Collective. Kristen has been to Ghana, West Africa 5 times in partnership with drummer and drum builder Michael Kweku Owusu, leading cultural and musical immersion tours. Kristen also plays guitar and has written songs in a new genre – Kids Afrobeat. One of these songs, GeogrAfrica, made it onto all the platforms in late 2024. Kristen currently teaches classes online (Zoom Drum) and in-person (Drumspiration!) at her studio (Drumlady K’s Rhythm Room) located in Takoma Park MD, and wherever she is called. Women (and womxn)’s empowerment through the drum, incarnate. I call it Drumming Empowerment. We will chant while playing a simple downbeat on our drums, leading up to a primal scream, while drumming. We will reach down into the center of our individual and collective pain, and let it fly. We will also learn basic djembe technique and a couple patterns and songs, and have time to create our own rhythm together by adding in one player at a time. Other instruments are welcome if you wish to bring them – melodic instruments like flutes, for instance – or other drums such as frame drums. Djembe drums available for rent ($10) or purchase ($195-$495 range) from Drumlady K. All playing levels welcome. Kristen Arant, aka The Drumlady, is a musician, activist and teaching artist whose mission is to facilitate skilled artistry and self-expression, and to build community towards the goal of creating positive social change amongst a diverse student body, with a special focus on women and girls. Originally an oboe player majoring in music and called to the drum via her activist pursuits, Kristen has studied West African drumming, song and percussion for 20+ years in order to utilize these art forms as her primary tools in furthering her mission. Kristen is the founder of the DC non-profit Young Women’s Drumming Empowerment Project (YWDEP), and of the all-women’s West African drumming ensemble Bele Bele Rhythm Collective. Kristen has been to Ghana, West Africa 5 times in partnership with drummer and drum builder Michael Kweku Owusu, leading cultural and musical immersion tours. Kristen also plays guitar and has written songs in a new genre – Kids Afrobeat. One of these songs, GeogrAfrica, made it onto all the platforms in late 2024. Kristen currently teaches classes online (Zoom Drum) and in-person (Drumspiration!) at her studio (Drumlady K’s Rhythm Room) located in Takoma Park MD, and wherever she is called. RESTORATIVE YOGA WITH MASSAGE WITH JENNI MECKELVANY, CERTIFIED YOGA INSTRUCTOR AND MASSAGE THERAPIST

In this Restorative Yoga Workshop, with MASSAGE, we will take time to care for ourselves to ground and align with this perfect healing combination of massage and yoga. We will be working in supported poses with the added benefits of massage to promote deep relaxation and healing of the muscles and the mind. Jenni Meckelvaney is a licensed massage therapist (for almost 25 Years!) a certified yoga instructor, an artist and a poet, who works in and outside of Havre de Grace. She is a beloved friend of KarmaFest who also loves her new crystal singing bowls! THIS IS A HIGHLY RECOMMENDED EVENT AND SPACE WILL BE LIMITED SO DO PLAN TO JOIN HER!
